The Date tree, which reminds me of my love of Surah Ibrahim, verse 24 where Allah talks about the Date tree.
Allah says:
See you not how Allah sets forth a parable! A goodly word as a goodly tree, whose root is firlmy fixed, and its branches reach the sky. Allah metaphorizes that the believer is like the beneficial Date tree. Its roots are so deep & firm beneath the ground that the tree resists strong desert winds. Staying firm in times of storms. The higher is grows the more its leaves hang down. A believer gets humbler when he gains more knowledge.
My love for Date trees is 12 years old & I went deep in the meaning of this ayah. When we came to Qatar, we saw these trees everywhere. Inspired by this verse, I bought a gold necklace which has a ‘Palm tree, a camel and sun in a ring’.
I had read Muhammad Asad’s “The Road to Makah’’. He mentioned about the barren beauty of Arabia of his time. It connected him to his true natural lifestyle after residing in Europe. He was a European Jew who ran away from the shackles of Western civilization. His love with infertile desert, sun, palm trees and dromedaries was very raw and pure. Yet, in the realm of industrialization nothing of that sort of Arabia exists today.
To focus on children’s needs, and to work with them to make sure their needs are met, constitutes a commitment to taking children seriously. It means treating them as people whose feelings and desires and questions matter.
Parents are like caregivers or Gardeners. They ease the seed to achieve its full potential. A seed has everything pre-programmed in it genetically. A watermelon seed grows into a watermelon plant and so does a grape seed. Yet, this is our own genetic engineering which changes them to ‘seedless grapes.’ When tomatoes are genetically engineered, they are bigger and robust. They remain fresh longer and ship farther from where they are grown. Has anyone questioned how intrinsically nutritious are they? Look at Bonsai. It is pruned, wired, and trained to fit in shallow pots for the mere purpose of decoration only!
The best combination of food served at home is 90% Plant & 10% animal based. The pace at which we are moving away from holistic lifestyle is pretty fast. This industrialization dates to the mid-19th century, especially after World War II. Industrialized farming is dependent on pesticides & antibiotics to maximize the yield per acre. Human health has suffered during Wars & Proxy-wars. What is the nutritious value of this food? and the havoc it is playing with people’s health? The food-industry mafia thinks the world’s population is growing. Feed us this type of food or we will starve. ‘Lab grown meat’ is not a solution to industrialized agriculture and its problems. Rather returning back to holistic lifestyle choices is, e.g home grown vegetables. I remember Dr Tom Cowan’s patient asked him, “Then Doc what should we eat?” He said, “Anything wrapped and has a barcode on it, do not eat it.”
William Cobbett also was not in sympathy with the Industrial Revolution in England. In his book ‘Rural Rides,’ he writes as a farmer and a social reformer. Cobbett wishes England would return to the rural England of the 1760s, in which he was born. He taught his children firsthand and there was no concept of schools in his time.
We will compare 4 needs of a seed to 4 needs of a child:
